Father Baker died more than 80-years ago, but his legacy as “Padre of the Poor” remains at Our Lady of Victory Basilica in Lackawanna and at Baker Victory Services. Father Baker’s 60 years in the priesthood were spent sheltering the homeless, feeding the hungry, caring for the sick and giving hope to the destitute. His legacy lives on today as OLV Charities and OLV Human Services, which provide many of the same kinds of charitable services Father Baker began decades ago. The last photo features all four men to play Father Baker (at various stages in his life) in the documentary. July 29 marks the 85th anniversary of the death of the Venerable Msgr. A priest from Buffalo, now a candidate for canonization, Father Baker spent 60 years caring for the orphaned, poor, sick and migrants. He breathed his last that morning while being blessed by Father Joseph Burke, who would later go on to become bishop of Buffalo. His life had been so impactful, that it is estimated that close to 500,000 people came to pay their respects to the humble priest as he lie in state. — Our Lady of Victory National Shrine & Basilica celebrated Father Baker ’ s life and legacy this weekend.
