The Rocky Mountain News photography staff received the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography “for its powerful collection of emotional images taken after the student shootings at Columbine High School.” The 20 award-winning images in this gallery are presented in the order submitted to the prize committee. Combined with having happened in a high school, a place meant to symbolize youth and facilitate learning, the shock around the story remains over 20 years later. These images represent my efforts to show the outpouring of compassion and care that came from the surrounding schools and community. In 1999, the emotional trauma of children being murdered in an American school was an unheard of tragedy.
